Fuel oil (No. 2 home heating oil) home heating oil is essentially the same product as diesel fuel, but it is dyed red to distinguish it from road-use motor vehicle fuel, which is subject to taxes that do not apply to home heating fuels. Nearly all domestic oil-burning furnaces on the market are made specifically to burn No. 2 oil.
